Three Trouble Spots, Three Different Fixes

The problems in this neighborhood aren't really mechanical — they're geography. The 37204 side is boxed in by Hillsboro Pike to the west, Belmont Boulevard to the east, and the I-65 Wedgewood interchange to the south, and most of our calls land on 12th Avenue South between Kirkwood and Sweetbriar.

On 12th itself, the angled spots near Frothy Monkey and Five Daughters look simple on a map, but the lane is tight and scraped bumpers or bent tie rods from a bad backing job are routine. We usually wheel-lift out of those spots rather than try to swing a flatbed into traffic.

Belmont Boulevard is its own animal. The downhill run from Wedgewood to Acklen cooks brakes on cars that aren't used to hills. If you smell something hot from a wheel well, stop before Hillsboro Pike and let us flatbed it.

And around Sevier Park, weekend farmers market and soccer crowds fill every spot from Kirkwood to Caldwell Lane. Reaching a dead battery in there means threading a wrecker past whoever's double-parked behind the taproom — which we do most Saturdays.

What I've Learned Towing in 12 South

I've been pulling cars out of 12 South for years, and the patterns are pretty predictable once you know the neighborhood. The single biggest issue I see isn't mechanical — it's parking. The angled spots along 12th Avenue South between Kirkwood and Linden look easy on Google Maps, but the lanes are narrow and the businesses turn over fast. People back into bumpers, scrape against the curb cuts at Frothy Monkey and Five Daughters Bakery, and end up with bent tie rods or punctured oil pans they didn't notice until the drive home.

Belmont Boulevard is a different story. The grade between Wedgewood Avenue and Acklen heats up brake systems on older cars, especially in summer. I get more "smoke from the wheel well" calls on that stretch than anywhere else in the area. If your brakes feel spongy after coming down Belmont, don't drive it home — I'll bring a flatbed and we'll get it to your shop before something fails on Hillsboro Pike.

Sevier Park weekends are their own thing. The farmers market, soccer practices, and the dog park crowd fill every spot from Kirkwood down to Caldwell Lane. When somebody's battery dies in there, getting a wrecker through means coordinating with whoever's blocking the alley behind 12 South Taproom. I know those alley layouts. I know which side streets — Paris Avenue, Ashwood, Gilmore — actually let a flatbed turn around and which ones dead-end against a fence.

And if you're a tourist who got off Lyft on Belmont Boulevard and your rental won't crank in the morning — that happens more than you'd think. Call me before you call the rental company's roadside line. I can usually have you jumped and tested in under 30 minutes, which beats waiting two hours for a national dispatch to find a contractor.
